In 2008, nearly 50% of houses in West Moors were occupied by pensioners.
Poor transport links in the rural area is often why people stay in hospital for longer than necessary. It's also why some people have to go into care homes and why many can no longer attend church or social clubs.
Heather, a Champion from the Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP), started looking into schemes that could help. She asked the area's GP Practice Manager and Care Lead if they would support a volunteer car scheme and they said they would.
The scheme started with funding of £1850 from POPP and additional funding of £1000 was granted by Grassroots.
West Moors Neighbourcar is still in operation and thriving. Although its primary aim is to provide transport for medical appointments, whenever possible other activites will also be accommodated.
POPP is available to people across Dorset excluding Bournemouth and Poole.
