Paul Hickman Chair of Trustees

Is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Paul has been a Trustee with Help and Care since June 2003 and was elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees in November 2004.

He brings with him wide experience of the local caring environment as the former Chair of Bournemouth MENCAP and non-executive Director of the Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust. As a retired London business director, Paul is also able to offer Help and Care useful business acumen.

Mike Standerwick

Mike took early retirement from IBM in 2003 after 32 years with the company.  He was Chairman of ENFOSAL - The Environmental Foundation for Sierra Leone - working in partnership with Action Aid bringing relief to destitute areas of the country.

Mike was appointed a trustee of Help & Care in November 2004.  He also volunteers in the Help and Care "Gay & Grey in Dorset" project. In 2005 Mike was appointed a trustee of the British Tinnitus Association and became a member of the Bournemouth and Poole Police Independent Advisory Group which he now chairs. 

Mike is 62 and lives with his partner Chris in Poole.

Nigel Appleton

Nigel Appleton

Nigel Appleton is Principal of Contact Consulting. He has a particular interest in the issues that arise for older people in securing housing and housing related services that will help maintain their independence and quality life.

Previously Nigel was Director of Anchor Housing Trust. He has in the past served as Vice Chair of the Centre for Policy on Ageing and has been an honorary research fellow at the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, Birmingham University. In the more distant past he was a member of the Governing Body of Age Concern England and a Board Member of Fold Housing Group, Northern Ireland.

Alan Barsley

Alan Barsley

Before his retirement in April 2004, Alan Barsley was a career banker with considerable international experience at a senior level including assignments in Australia, Japan and the Middle East. Alan came to Dorset in 1996 following the merger of Chase Manhattan with Chemical Bank and was at the centre of efforts to integrate all operational and systems aspects for the combined bank and ensure that the merger process was completed on schedule. Alan has been married to Jill for 27 years and they have two children.

Fiona Cowdell

Fiona Cowdell

Fiona is a PDU Consultant and Researcher in health and social care at Bournemouth University and in the broader academic environment working in the area of developing practice and patient focused services. Fiona is a registered nurse and worked in the NHS for 15 years before leaving to focus on her PHD in Dementia Care.

Pauline Hicks

Pauline Hicks

Pauline Wicks was one of the founder members of Help and Care and was present at the first meeting called by Bournemouth Helping Services in 1985. 

Pauline was a member of the Steering Group and the following year became Chair of the newly formed Help and Care. Now, after twenty years with Help and Care, Pauline is committed to the concept that ‘information is power’ and she has worked tirelessly to ensure that people have access to the information they need. Pauline believes in empowerment and she is determined to continue working to help local people make informed decisions that affect their daily lives.

Ted Taylor

Ted Taylor

Ted Taylor retired in 1993 after spending his working life as a Youth Worker, first for Bournemouth Council and then for Dorset County Council.

Ted joined Help and Care as a Trustee in 1993 after recognising the charity’s positive thinking towards older people. He has since devoted his energies to ensuring that older people remain involved and that Help and Care services and actions are based on their needs and concerns.

Ted was elected as Mayor of Bournemouth in 2005 and is currently a Councillor for Kinson South Ward.

Clarie Foreman

Claire Foreman has worked over 20 years in the public and voluntary sector, particularly in the field of health and social care. She has held roles that span direct work with individual service users through to Executive Director in Social Care.

An honours graduate in Economics, Claire’s particular achievements include the publication for the IDEA 'Turning Policy into Outcomes', leading an Adult Social Care Department to three star excellent performance and establishing the first multi-agency adult safeguarding service in the authority.

Roger Browning

Roger grew up in West Howe, Bournemouth graduated from the NHS Management Training Scheme and became chief executive at Dorset HealthCare Trust in 1992 which, under his leadership became one of the best performing mental health trusts in the country. Roger was made an honorary doctor of education at Bournemouth University last year. A member of Littledown Harriers and veteran of more than 30 marathons, he hopes to take part in two races this year, the London Marathon and up a mountain in Switzerland.
