Carers have their say in Dorset

Carers Rights Day in Dorset 2007
In celebration of Carers Rights Day on Friday 7 December, Help and Care and Dorset County Council (Adult & Community Services) organised three events for Carers and those working to support them.
The events took place in Blandford, Bridport and Wimborne and gave Carers a chance to hear what progress had been made over the last three years under the Dorset Carers Strategy 2005-08.
The afternoon was spent discussing Carers’ experiences of social care and health services. They were given the opportunity to suggest action points to be included in the new five year strategy which is currently being put together by Dorset County Council.
Suggestions from Carers included:-
· Surgeries to make more use of Carers’ Leads and Carers’ Registers
· A more flexible approach to respite
· Acute and community hospitals to make Carers more aware of the support available to them
· A discharge checklist to be used by acute and community hospitals to make sure patients are discharged in a clean and appropriate condition and in liaison with any Carer who may be looking after them upon their arrival home
