Help and Care gives a welcome day out to isolated older people
Help and Care, the Dorset-based independent charity, and Westbourne Rotary Club joined together to create a memorable day out for normally isolated older people in Bournemouth on Wednesday September 12.
Older people who use the Help and Care befriending service were treated to lunch at Bournemouth Pier restaurant followed by an afternoon enjoying the show Summer Spectacular at the Pier Theatre.
The Help and Care befriending service is run by volunteers who call an isolated person every week to make sure they are ok and have all the support that they need.
“Many of the people who use the befriending service live alone and their once a week telephone call is their only contact in a lonely week,” said Terry Purnell, Development Officer at Help and Care.
“In Bournemouth there are a great many people who do not get the opportunity to leave their homes because of worry about falling, lack of mobility or being lonely and isolated. For many the afternoon we organised will be their first outing this year.”
Catherine Stretton attended the outing:
“It is only the second time this year that I have been out except for when I was in hospital and I cannot remember when I last went to the theatre. It is nice to know that there are organisations that think about us.”
