Carers Week 13 - 19 June 2011
Throughout the U.K. there are some 6 million people who are considered ‘carers’ and of these 3.4 million also work, either in full or part time employment.[1]
WORKING CARERS in Bournemouth are being invited to attend a ‘lunch break’ event where they can access free information and advice to help them in their Caring role.
To mark Carers Week (13 – 19 June) local charity Help and Care is working together with Bournemouth Borough Council to put on the event on Thursday 16 June, from 11am – 3pm at Bournemouth Town Hall in the HMS Phoebe meeting room.
Working Carers are people who are in a full or part time job and also look after partners, relatives or friends who could not manage without help. In Bournemouth there are more than 16,000 carers, including more than 9,000 carers who are employed[2]. Often working carers do not broadcast the fact that they are caring for someone because they are concerned that it may affect their career.
A number of advisors from a range of organisations will be on hand to provide information and advice during the event. Organisations attending include; Help and Care, Alzheimer's Society, Parkinson’s Society, LINks and Bournemouth Society for the Visually Impaired. Information from ‘Employers for Carers’ a national organisation focussed on helping the employer, will also be available.
Carers wishing to attend the event should call Terry Purnell at Help and Care 0300 111 3303.
Sonia DeFreitas, Locality Manager for Carers Services at Help and Care said: “We are concerned that there are a number of Carers in Bournemouth who do not know who to turn to for help. This event is being held to provide help, support and information that could help people in their daily caring and working role.”
