Top tips to keep warm this winter
- If you don’t have thermostatic valves on your radiators consider installing them. The valves will allow you to control the temperature in each of your rooms.
- If you have a gas fire in your living room for your safety make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector positioned in the room, these can be purchased from DIY stores and chemists for around £15.
- Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need – if you do this the kettle will boil faster and this will save you money.
- Closing your curtains when it gets dark will keep the heat in - it stops heat escaping through windows.
- Turn your appliances off completely - if you switch them off at the power button or at the wall, you are not paying for electricity that is going to waste.
- Remember to switch off lights in rooms that are not in use.
- Change to low energy bulbs, they only use one fifth of the electricity of normal bulbs.
- Check the batteries in your smoke alarm to make sure it is working properly, this should be done regularly throughout the year.
- Put lids on pans when cooking, this will keep the heat where you need it and the cooking times will be quicker.
- Make sure you have draught-proofing around gaps in window and door frames, this will prevent both heat loss and draughts.
