What do volunteers do for Help and Care?
Volunteers are a valued part of Help and Care and contribute to our work in a number of ways. We have approximately 140 volunteers, involved in different projects and services.
A group of about 50 people are registered as general volunteers; they undertake a wide range of tasks offering short term support to people. Tasks are varied, expenses are paid and full training and ongoing support is provided. Tasks may include accompanying someone to an appointment, doing some shopping or writing a letter. The telephone befriending service now runs on three afternoons a week, when a team of volunteers make regular phone contact to isolated people.
The Moneyfriends scheme offers practical help (but not financial advice) to those suddenly faced with managing finances. Volunteers also help with a walking group and do home visits to people following bereavement.
A recent scheme has seen a group of volunteers running an activity table each week at Christchurch Hospital to help stimulate people recovering form the effects of strokes.
What’s in it for me?
Help and Care has recently achieved Investors in Volunteers accreditation, we are one of the first organisations in the country to receive this recognition and the first in Dorset. This is a nationally recognised award and enables us to publicly acknowledge our commitment to volunteering.
We believe that volunteering helps the volunteer just as much as the person they are helping. It keeps people active and agile, gets them out meeting new people and offers an opportunity to help someone in their own way and on their terms.
