Douglas' story - Leaving a legacy to help

Douglas was bed bound when he first met Help & Care. He didn’t have any family and hadn’t married, so he relied on Help & Care to receive the support he needed as he was approaching the end of life.

Our Advocacy Team supported Douglas when he most needed it. They spoke on his behalf with other people and organisations, made him aware of all his options, and visited him while he was in hospital.

His one wish was to stay at home and live as independently as possible with the right support in place. The Advocacy Team ensured he had the help he needed to continue living by himself and didn't have to go into a care home.

Sadly, Douglas passed away in 2012. As a result of the care and support he received from Help & Care, Douglas decided to leave his estate to the charity.

“Help & Care has done so much for me that I wanted to leave a gift in my Will to help others in my situation.”

Douglas had wanted his legacy to help others like him live better lives and that’s exactly what’s happened. Over three years, the money left by Douglas helped us to carry out 2,288 vital volunteer referrals and over 8,000 regular Telephone Support Service calls to isolated older people. We’re working hard to make sure that Douglas’s memory continues through the work that we do.
