Peter’s story – Volunteering at Roots

Peter is in his forties and has been volunteering at Roots for two years.

Due to mental health illness, Peter decided to quit his job, as it was causing stress and he couldn’t cope with it anymore. Peter said:

"I used to work in an office but I became unwell and suffered from psychotic episodes and depression. Now that I’m recovering and starting to feel so much better, I want to give something back to the community.”

Being part of Roots gives Peter structure to his day, it’s a reason to get up in the morning and follow a routine. He has also developed gardening and teamwork skills, and his self-esteem is gradually improving.

Overall, Peter now feels more positive about life.
