  • What is your name, how long have you been working for Help & Care, and what is your role?
I’m Lucy, and I’ve been at Help & Care for about 3 years overall. I started as an engagement officer for Healthwatch and then came back after a short time away. I’m now a project officer funded by Macmillan within the Involving People team.
  • Why did you decide to join Help & Care?
I’ve always worked in the charity sector and had actually never heard of Healthwatch before. When I saw the role, I knew it was something I’d enjoy.
  • What does a normal day look like for you at work?
Bit of a cliché, but there isn’t really a ‘normal day’! They really are all different, particularly as I am supporting the Wessex Cancer Alliance steering group too. I am lucky that each day is a bit of a mix of meetings, admin and getting out and about when I can.
  • What do you enjoy the most about your work? What inspires you the most about your work?
I enjoy the work I do directly with people; I always have. That’s the answer to both questions, really – there is something humbling and inspiring about working with people who have experienced some really awful stuff but choose to use those experiences to make things better for others. Supporting them to do that makes me feel like I make a difference.
  • What word would your team use to describe you?
    Organised
  • What’s your favourite memory from working here?
Definitely the workshops we have done as part of the disability and neurodivergent project. For lots of different reasons – I learnt so much (about myself and others) and connected with lots of people, and it has really come through in the final reports how much of an impact those discussions will make. It’s hard to explain, but you could tell that the people we spoke to found it almost a therapy and truly appreciated being heard – it was great to be a part of.
  • How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Doing anything with my husband and daughter – especially holidays, camping and days out. Cooking, being outside (by the sea) and paddleboarding.
  • Why should someone want to work at Help & Care?
It is a lovely place to work and a place where staff are valued. People work here because they genuinely care and want to make a difference, so you’re always surrounded by great people.
