Help & Care has made the difficult yet responsible decision to close its Roots service, following a strategic review of how best to support people in today’s mental health and vocational landscape.

Established in 1989, Roots provides a safe recovery space, meaningful activity, and opportunities to develop practical skills for people experiencing mental ill health. Through community gardening, the service also supports older and vulnerable residents to maintain their gardens safely.

All individuals currently involved in Roots will receive tailored support and warm handovers into appropriate services. Older residents who rely on gardening assistance will be supported to connect with safe and reputable local providers. Our priority is ensuring continuity of care and a positive transition for everyone affected.

The decision reflects the need to align our services with current best practice. Modern mental health and vocational pathways now offer more flexible, personalised and connected support, with stronger links into community-based opportunities, training and employment. Although financial pressures are not the primary driver, recent operational challenges accelerated a review of the service’s long-term sustainability.

Mark Sharman, CEO, said:

“We are incredibly proud of what Roots has achieved since 1989. However, services must evolve to meet changing needs. This transition allows us to focus on expanding the reach of our current services and developing partnerships that provide more choice, flexibility and personalised support for the people we serve.”

Help & Care would like to thank the colleagues, participants, volunteers, partners, clients and funders who have supported Roots over many years. Their contribution has shaped a service that has made a meaningful difference in our local community.

Help & Care remains committed to supporting people’s wellbeing and independence across Dorset and beyond. For any questions about the closure, please contact us at 0300 111 3303.
