Help & Care’s Involving People team, in partnership with Wessex Cancer Alliance and OpenSight, has launched a project exploring how sensory impairment affects experiences of cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and support.

Too often, people with sight or hearing loss face inaccessible information, communication barriers, and a lack of reasonable adjustments within health services. These challenges can lead to people feeling unheard, avoiding care, or experiencing poorer outcomes. This project seeks to change that.

Through accessible workshops, focus groups and conversations, the project will listen directly to people with lived experience and work with them to co-create practical, realistic solutions for cancer services.

People do not need to have had cancer to get involved.

Experiences of screening, GP visits, referrals, or general concerns about access to cancer care are all welcome.

The insights gathered will help shape:

  • A summary report highlighting key barriers and recommendations
  • Practical guidance and resources for cancer services
  • A toolkit to help teams and professionals better support people with sight and hearing loss

Participants taking part in focus groups will receive a £25 voucher as a thank-you for their time.
