Disposing of unwanted items in Purbeck

Domestic Refuse Collection

Purbeck District Council offers an alternate week collection service for refuse and recycling. The majority of households have been provided with a 240 litre wheeled bin which should be used for any waste that cannot be recycled and a green 55 litre box for the collection of recyclable material. The wheeled bin is collected one week and the green box is collected the next week. This means they are collected fortnightly on alternate weeks. All bins and boxes need to be placed adjacent to the road at the front of your property before 7am on the day of your collection.

Green Box Recycling

The following items can be recycled via the green box collection:

• Newspapers, magazines, paper, and junk mail

• Yellow pages directories, light card (cereal boxes, tissue boxes)

• Glass bottles and jars (please rinse)

• Food and drink cans (please rinse and squash)

• Household aerosols (don’t squash)

• Textiles ( including clothes, curtains, towels sheets, sheets, and blankets)

• Good quality shoes (please tie together)

Items that can’t go into the kerbside recycling box

• Plastic bottles, plastic containers and wrapping

• Carrier bags, envelopes, brown cardboard, bulky catalogues

• Light bulbs, drinking glasses, glass cookware

If you have more items to recycle than will fit into the green box then place them in plastic bags or additional boxes alongside your recycling box on collection day. Alternatively you can take them to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Garden Waste

The best way to deal with garden waste is to home compost it for re-use on the garden. In order to encourage this Purbeck District Council in partnership with Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) are offering composters from as little as £8. For further details contact 0844 571 4444 or www.dorset.getcomposting.com . If you are unable to home compost the garden waste can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre where it will be turned into compost for re-sale to the community.

For further details of all refuse and recycling schemes, and if there are any problems please contact the Recycle for Purbeck Helpline on 01929 557279 or email recycle@purbeck-dc.gov.uk or visit www.purbeck.gov.uk

Clinical waste

It is very unusual for householders to need to deal with clinical waste. Most households that are likely to produce clinical waste will have been advised of supporting collection services by their GP or local hospital. In general the following guidelines are in place:

• Sharps (eg. Needles) – local GPs have sharps boxes, as do local police stations. You should contact your local police station or GP directly. East Dorset also have collection boxes contact 01202 639006 for further details.

• Nappies/incontinence pads – can be safely disposed of through the normal refuse collection service.

• Out of date medicines – should be returned to the local chemists for proper disposal.

• Other household clinical waste – contact your GP or local hospital for advice about collection. Contact Medical Transport Services for details of collection in Purbeck on 01202 851322, and Brian Cassidy on 01305 255573 for North Dorset.
