Age Concern Poole – ‘BUSS’ Bus Service

This service is for organised groups of older or disabled people and their carers living in the Poole and Westbourne area only. This service is very popular and needs to be booked well in advance.

The bus is available for local travel or day trips and a volunteer driver will be provided. People can be collected and returned to their own homes by prior arrangement. Wheelchairs cannot be accommodated.

The charge is £30 for the first 20 miles, then 85p per mile for each extra mile.

Poole Community Transport Service

Poole Community Transport Service offers cars with driver, low floor and wheelchair accessible transport for the Borough of Poole residents who do not have access to a car and are unable to use public transport. The service provides door to door transport including:

• An accessible Dial-A-Bus service for shopping, taking passengers to the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Shopmobility and Sainsbury’s in Poole.

• A voluntary driver service for all your other essential journeys. There are cars that are wheelchair accessible and can be driven by a voluntary driver. A family member or friend can train to drive this for you also.

Unfortunately the voluntary driver service cannot be used for shopping trips or hospital appointments.

How much will it cost?

An annual membership fee is payable and a small charge is made for your journey. Current fares and Membership cost will be advised at the time of joining.


Dial-A-Bus - This shopping minibus operates Monday to Saturday picking up passengers from their homes from 10.45am onwards. The Dial-A-Bus arrives at Poole town centre at 12 noon, dropping off at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Shopmobility, and Sainsbury’s. Passengers then have approximately 2hrs in Poole and can be collected at any of the pick-up points for the return journey home. All vehicles are fully accessible and can accommodate passengers with their shopping trolleys or mobility equipment, such as Zimmer frames and rollators. Subject to assessment, passengers who need to travel whilst seated in their wheelchair can be safely transported on Dial-A-Bus. Mobility Scooters are not permitted on Dial-A-Bus for safety reasons.

Voluntary Driver Service – If you need help with transport to get to places such as your GP or Dentist, Church service or lunch club, then a voluntary driver may be able to help you. Voluntary drivers can also be booked to provide transport to enable you to visit a friend or relative in a care home or hospital.

Please note however that Voluntary drivers cannot be booked for shopping trips (please use Dial-A-Bus) or for hospital appointments (please arrange via your GP for appointments at Poole Hospital and contact the hospital itself for appointments at Bournemouth Hospital).

We will always try to accommodate your request for a voluntary driver, including evenings, weekends and holidays such as Christmas and Easter. However, this is dependent upon driver availability. All our drivers will assist you however they can, but should you have any special requests please contact the booking office who will try and help.

Wheelchair Accessible Car – For those who need to travel whilst seated in their wheelchair, we have specially trained voluntary drivers who can provide transport in our Citroen Berlingo which is a wheelchair accessible car. The car can take a front seat passenger, a wheelchair user and a passenger in the rear of the car, so should you need to travel with a carer they can sit next to you.
Subject to completion of a short training session, friends and family members may book the wheelchair accessible car to take you out. A charge is made based on the mileage covered.
The cost of hiring the Berlingo with a family member or friend driving is a flat rate per mile and it is available 365 days a year.

To join the scheme – please telephone 01202 262220, we will discuss your eligibility and arrange for a home visit to register you as a member. During the home visit the officer will discuss your transport needs and how we can best help you. If necessary, an assessment will be carried out on wheelchairs/mobility equipment to ensure that we can provide the correct vehicle.

Concessionary Travel – If you do not have a bus-pass (Connect Card) or are unable to use yours because you are not able to use the bus, then you may be eligible for vouchers to help pay for your journeys. Eligibility for vouchers will be assessed during the home visit.

To make a booking - Following your home visit and completion of the registration process, simply contact the booking office on 01202 262299 to book your transport. The office is open Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 12 noon. We ask that you try and give as much notice as possible to avoid disappointment and book no more than three trips at a time.


Poole Shopmobility – Wheels for freedom

For people of any age who have mobility problems, whether the result of permanent of temporary disablement, age, accident or illness, who wish to shop or visit Poole Town Centre. Clients do not need to be registered disabled.

Shopmobility can provide the short term loan of a wheelchair (powered or manual) or a powered scooter.

Annual membership fee: £20 plus £1 per trip.
Temporary Visitor fee: Wheelchair - £3 and Scooter - £6 plus a £5 refundable deposit.
