Community transport – transporting the Community

If you need transport to get to non-emergency medical appointments, visit someone in hospital, attend a social activity or just to visit friends and family then Community Transport may be the answer. A telephone service is now available for anyone to find out if there is a community transport scheme in their area. Just call the number and provide your postcode. Dorset Community Transport Directory

Dorset County Council Adult & Community Services in association with Dorset Community Action have produced a booklet listing 40 voluntary car schemes, dial-a-rides and other Community Transport initiatives across Dorset. To download the Directory, go to the Community Transport link on the Dorset For You website: www.dorsetforyou.com. Dorset Country Cars

This covers a number of schemes in rural areas of Dorset. The scheme is for people who are not able to use or access public transport.Contributions are between 25p and 35p per mile (this varies from scheme to scheme) for journeys up to 50 miles round trip. Bookings should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Can be used to visit your doctor, clinic, chiropodist, friends or relatives in hospital, collect prescriptions and connect with a bus, train or coach. The scheme cannot be used for hospital appointments.Bookings should be with your local organiser listed below, who will then check that the journey is eligible and arrange for a driver. Gillingham Area Voluntary Car Link Scheme

Help is available for transport to:

• Medical and related appointments

• Visiting a friend or relation in hospital

• Collecting shopping, library books, prescriptions etc

• To and from the hairdressers or barbers

• For social outings

The transport is organised by a group of local people supported by volunteer drivers and co-ordinators, and offers assistance to people in the SP8 postcode area who need help with transport. Users of the service will be given an envelope to make donations towards the running costs of the service. Contact 07599 311443 for further details.

Hillside Car Scheme

A community car transport scheme run by volunteers. Transport is available to people within the Hazelbury Bryan and Hillside areas that are unable to access public transport. Journeys undertaken to within a 20 mile radius of Hazelbury Bryan or Hillside. Customers will be asked to pay an initial £5 registration fee, and will then be charged 50p per mile for any journeys that they make. The scheme is able to make journeys within a 20 mile radius of the Hillside and Hazelbury Bryan area.

Milton Abbas Neighbourcar

A Neighbour Car Scheme set up by Dorset POPPs to help local elderly and isolated people who are not able to access public transport. Registration is £5, trips to medical appointments are charged at 45p per mile, social trips are charged at 50p per mile. Please book trips in advance, office open 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday and Saturday morning until noon. If you have a disability, please contact first to discuss your needs. North Dorset Community Accessible Transport – NORDCAT

A door-to-door on demand service for people of all ages who cannot use normal public transport and for all people aged over 60. Available in North and North West Dorset for shopping, visiting friends, medical appointments and so on. NORDCAT minibuses are wheelchair accessible and can carry up to 15 passengers. The services run in different areas each day with a chance each week to visit larger towns, such as Poole, Bournemouth, Street Shopping Village, Exeter, and Salisbury & Dorchester.
