Your donation will support our Community Works service which has been providing practical support for older people & carers delivered by volunteers since 2003. Community Works receives no public funding or subsidy and we are dependent on the generosity of people like you to maintain the service.
Community Works promotes wellbeing by assisting older people & carers with some of the difficulties associated with daily living:
- Health and wellbeing – volunteers assist older people to attend hospital visits, GP and dental appointments. In addition our volunteers support people on a regular Wellbeing Walking Group which offers opportunities for people who are isolated to meet others and participate in gentle exercise.
- Financial wellbeing - Our ‘Money Friend’ volunteers provide invaluable support on a range of financial matters from budgeting to setting up of direct debits etc.
- Emotional wellbeing – our Telephone Support volunteers currently contact over 60 older people per week. In addition to the chance to chat, the volunteer callers offer extra support if needed. The service is invaluable, offering a listening ear and support and information as required. Without this service many individuals would feel completely on their own without, what some have called, ‘a life line’.
Together Community Works reduces levels of loneliness and social isolation and improves the health and wellbeing of older people. The voluntees contribute to keeping people well and help minimise problems with disease or long term conditions.
Last year our volunteers received over 800 referrals for practical support equating to approximately 2,400 volunteer hours. Separately the Telephone Support volunteers made over 3,000 telephone calls to isolated people.
